Beat the Rat Race - Wednesday 22nd October 2014 - King's Road Centre, Newcastle University

In collaboration with Europe Direct, Routes into Languages presents Beat the Rat Race: Using Languages To Get Ahead. Representatives of a wide range of professional sectors will demonstrate how language skills have benefited them in their careers in a fun and interactive way during morning Q&A sessions. In the afternoon, pupils will have the opportunity to learn a completely new language during taster sessions run by our very own Student Language Ambassadors, culminating in a competition to see which group has learned the most!

With an exciting panel of real life linguists, language taster sessions and more, this event is designed to inspire your pupils to take languages forward at GCSE and show them just where it could take them in future.

The panellists use languages in their jobs every day and come from a wide variety of backgrounds and organisations in the region. This is a unique chance to highlight the opportunities available to those proficient in a foreign language.

The event will take place in the King's Road Centre at Newcastle University on Wednesday 22nd October from 10.00-14.30, with registration from 09.30. Materials will be provided in advance of the event to enable you to encourage your pupils to engage as well as possible with activities during the event. A full and finalised programme will be available shortly.

In a change to previous years, in a bid  to enable a greater number of schools to participate the event is open to groups of 10 pupils per school who are in their options year (Year 8/9).

Programme:

Registration from 09:30 for a 10:00 start. Morning activities will include Q&A sessions with linguists representing a variety of career sectors whilst pupils will explore a new language in afternoon tater sessions. A packed lunch for pupils and buffet lunch for teachers will be provided free of charge. The day will end at 14.30.
