Projector is a collaboration project between Routes NW & Cornerhouse Manchester. This is a year-round education programme, which uses film, moving image and contemporary art to enrich students’ learning and bring innovation to the classroom. Throughout the year we have a variety of MFL study sessions specially programmed to support GCSE, AS and A2 students of French, German, Spanish and Urdu, all led by native language speakers.
Each of our study sessions use film as an exciting and accessible way to encourage students to use their language skills. Students will enjoy a specially selected film, screened in the target language with English subtitles. Sessions are supported by contextualising introductions, which provide information about the themes and characters of the film along with information about the film's director and place within film history and culture. Following the film, students complete language exercises based on the film using their new vocabulary.
Films are selected to complement GCSE, AS and A2 specifications and provide excellent material for topic-based work and oral exam preparation.
All French sessions are led by Isabelle Vanderschelden, Senior Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University.
In this interactive study session, students will explore French popular cinema using Populaire as a recent example of film which was well received in France and the UK. Isabelle Vanderschelden will introduce the film in French and will situate the film within cultural contexts of late 1950s France.
The screening will be followed by a series of language exercises in French and will include character studies and a focus on the film’s stars. The session will be of particular interest to students working on topics such as representation of the family, social classes, couples and relationships and women at work in post-war France.
Populaire (12A)

Set in 1950s France, Populaire is the extraordinary tale of Rose, a village shopkeeper’s daughter who travels to Normandy to try out for a job as a secretary for local lawyer and bachelor, Louis. Lacking the grace necessary to perform the role, Rose’s interview is a disaster but reveals a special gift – she is a speed demon on the typewriter! Louis’ competitive spirit is reawakened and he hires Rose and begins an intensive training regime to prepare her to compete in the country’s cut-throat and high profile typing contests.
