GCSE Study Morning: Le Petit Nicolas

Projector is a collaboration project between Routes NW & Cornerhouse Manchester. This is a year-round education programme, which uses film, moving image and contemporary art to enrich students’ learning and bring innovation to the classroom. Throughout the year we have a variety of MFL study sessions specially programmed to support GCSE, AS and A2 students of French, German, Spanish and Urdu, all led by native language speakers.
Each of our study sessions use film as an exciting and accessible way to encourage students to use their language skills. Students will enjoy a specially selected film, screened in the target language with English subtitles. Sessions are supported by contextualising introductions, which provide information about the themes and characters of the film along with information about the film's director and place within film history and culture. Following the film, students complete language exercises based on the film using their new vocabulary.
Films are selected to complement GCSE, AS and A2 specifications and provide excellent material for topic-based work and oral exam preparation.
All French sessions are led by Isabelle Vanderschelden, Senior Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University.
This GCSE study morning focuses on Le Petit Nicholas, a lively adaptation of a children’s literary classic by René Goscinny. Students will learn about the themes of the film in a pre-screening introduction which will be delivered in English with some key French phrases and vocabulary. Students will watch a full screening of the film with English subtitles and this will be followed by a series of GCSE level language exercises based on the film's main characters and using the themes of home, family, friends and school life.

A delightful comedy chronicling the adventures of Nicolas, a mischievous French schoolboy. When Nicolas overhears his parents talking about a new arrival, he knows it can only mean one thing: a baby! Convinced they are making plans to abandon him in the forest to make room for his sibling he enlists the help of his fellow classmates to make sure he will survive.
