From Aleppo to Hollywood is a documentary made by the Al Jazeera news network TV channel focusing on the life of the world famous film producer and director Moustapha al-Akkad. Most famous for his Halloween horror film series this documentary charts the director's life from a young boy growing up in Aleppo to his journey to Hollywood and focuses on the 1976 film The Message, about the prophet Mohammad.
Led by Dr. Muntasir Al-Hamad, Lecturer of Arabic, Manchester Metropolitan University and Mohamad Aljarrah, Language Tutor, Manchester Metropolitan University.
In this GCSE study session, students will be introduced to contemporary Arabic Cinema through the screening of From Aleppo to Hollywood, which will enable students to develop the ability to communicate effectively in Arabic. Students will learn more about the life and work of legendary Arabic producer and director Moustapha al-Akkad. Charting Akkad's upbringing and life in Syria through to how he became attached to the cinema and made his way to the USA, this session aims to explore Arabic cinema issues of East meets Western culture.
Students will be encouraged to take part in reading, writing, speaking and listening activities; as well as enhancing positive attitudes to Arabic learning.
