Brazilian Language and Culture
This workshop introduces students to Brazilian culture and Portuguese language through songs, videos and pictures. It uses role-plays, discussion, music, and a short film about capoeira.
The Language Resource Centre at Newcastle University has a small team in place, which will be available from Mid-January for virtual school visits, synchronous and asynchronous to promote language learning, and inter-cultural activities in line with the Routes into Languages aims. This event is for final year undergraduate students of modern foreign languages who may be considering a career in teaching. There will be opportunity to learn about the various different routes open to you (PGCE, School Direct and more) at both primary and secondary level, with speakers from Northumbria and Newcastle University and a chance to quiz teachers local to the North East.

A half-day workshop running from 12-3pm, this event for Year 11 pupils will focus on Chinese film. It comprises both a film viewing and interactive language-based activities. Most importantly, it is open to those not learning Chinese and will be followed by a taster session in Chinese and Chinese calligraphy.

This masterclass for Year 10 pupils will take place from 9-11am at the University of Sunderland City Campus and will feature language based activities focusing on Spain and Latin America.

Thanks to the Routes into Languages team at the University of Sunderland, The Great Languages Bake Off is returning for 2015!
Specifically for Year 9 pupils, The Great Languages Bake Off is a video and cooking competition with a foreign language twist. You can find some great inspiration from the 2013 competition here. You can also download a promotional flyer for the 2015 competition at the bottom of this page.
How does it work?
Each participating school prepares a dish in French, German, Spanish or Mandarin Chinese.
You then:
Create and submit an ingredients list and instructions on how to make it in the target language.
Film and submit a video of your food preparation and narrate the process in the target language.
Include a commentary on the key language points that are worked on in the video.
Each school may enter up to 3 groups of pupils from Year 9.
A celebration event will be held for participants on the 22nd April 2015 at the University of Sunderland.

To take part in the Great Languages Bake Off you need to:
All the recipes will go into a PDF e- booklet that will be distributed to schools and universities via the Routes into Languages network.
NOTE: Please find a Routes into Languages photo permission form below which must be completed by all participants (further information to follow).
Technical Requirements for your Video
Presentation Day: Wed 22 April 9-1 at the University of Sunderland
Each group that entered a video into the competition will give a presentation (in English) on the process and show their video to an audience of peers and university staff. This will take place at the University of Sunderland on the Wed 22 April 9-1. Presentations should be between 5-6 minutes (including the time taken to view the video). Each group member should speak. You should talk about:
1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes will be awarded to the overall best three groups as decided by a panel of judges. All participants receive a certificate of participation.
Refreshments will be provided at the presentation day which.
Assessment criteria for the presentation:
• Appropriate vocabulary
• Effective communication (voice, fluency, accuracy, clarity)
Assessment criteria for the video:
• Creativity
• Culinary Success
• Accuracy of language
• Pronunciation and fluency

The European Day of Languages is fast approaching so why not mark the occasion by taking part in a special competition for school children, linking languages and Lindisfarne through the creation of an illuminated page using a language other than English? This is a great activity to organise on or around the day itself, with the deadline for entries as a result set as Monday 7th October. Routes into Languages is offering a fantastic opportunity for students to attend an AS and A Level language afternoon this autumn. Don't miss out on this great opportunity!
It will be held on campus, at Northumbria University, where a team of expert language teachers and student ambassadors will engage your sixth formers in 3 hours of intensive language activities including mini-lectures, an introduction to interpreting, and activity in the language labs.
The day will run from 1:30-4:30pm - **This information is correct. Please ignore information above saying this is an All Day event, unfortunately the website says this automatically**
Please note that due to staffing issues this day is aimed only at students studying French or Spanish. Places are limited to 70 for French and 70 for Spanish so book early to avoid disappointment.
Please also note that the programme will be different from the first AS/A level afternoon on 23/10 so you can book for both!
