Mother Tongue Other Tongue FREE CPD Event – 12th Feb, from 4.30-6.30pm We are holding a free CPD event at Manchester Metropolitan University for interested teachers and organisations.  This event will explain more about the project and supporting resources.

 

Mother Tongue Other Tongue Poetry Competition

After the huge success of our pilot Mother Tongue Other Tongue poetry competition last year, we are launching the competition nationally this year. Mother Tongue Other Tongue is a multi-lingual poetry project intended to celebrate cultural diversity and the many languages currently spoken by young people across the United Kingdom. 

The project is supported by the Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, and further details can be found at www.mtot.org.uk

Spelling Bee Regional Final

Winners of the school-wide Spelling Bee competitions for Year 7 will join us for the Regional Spelling Bee Final on Wednesday, 20th March 2013.

The competition will be held at Manchester Metropolitan University and will see the region's top spellers in French, German and Spanish competing for a place in the National Final, which will be held at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge on Friday 5th July 2013.

Winners will be presented with trophies, with certificates for the runners up.

3.00 – 4.00pm: Round One (Part A)

4.00 – 4.45pm: Round One (part B) / Cultural Workshops (e.g. Arabic dance / Chinese paper-folding)

These half-day events are offered in French, Spanish, German and Italian, and will focus on a popular film studied by A2

students. The workshop will include the following elements: structuring an essay, arguing and illustrating

a point, focusing on characters, themes and director’s style, building a phrase-bank to discuss films, learning

film terminology.

French Masterclass (Year 9/10)

An opportunity to spend the morning reinforcing your knowledge of French and to practise the spoken language in

an informal and relaxing environment as well as to interact with pupils from other schools in the area.

Classes are taught by qualified native speakers who are associate Lecturers at Plymouth University.

These classes are free but pupils have to pay for their own transport to the Plymouth Business School.

 

Film and Culture Event for Languages (FACE) GCSE Day

The Film and Culture Event for Languages (FACE) Day is open to language students in Years 10-11 and will be hosted by Manchester Metropolitan University. It is designed to highlight the benefits of learning languages through a Careers and Languages talk, and the fun way in which languages can be taught, with a Languages and Film session. Activities will also include a language taster, to show how languages can be taught at university and highlighting the diverse range of language study options available at a higher level.

The event is hoped to boost students’ enthusiasm for language learning so that they continue with their languages to A Level and beyond. This is an excellent opportunity to show language students the variety of languages on offer; and the variety of fun ways students can learn languages.

This event has a small charge and we are asking for a nominal fee of £4 per pupil to cover some of the costs.

The events use language tasters and cultural activities in less widely taught languages to encourage the learning of languages generally.

Please note there is a small fee of £4 per pupil to attend.

The events are only open to schools where languages are not compulsory. Priority will be given to schools who have not attended a LEE in previous years.
