Introduction to Japanese Language and Culture

An Introduction to Japanese language and culture by a qualified native speaker.
 

This workshop is open to all, pupils and teachers, and is aimed at complete beginners.

These classes are free but participants have to pay for their own transport to the Plymouth Business School.

 

The workshop will take place in the Roland Levinsky building, Room 208, from 9.45 am to 1 pm.

The University of Bristol will host 87 year 8 pupils from 7 local schools on Friday 7th March. 
Programme: 
The pupils will participate in two workshops (one ICT and one drama-based) on one of three languages they currently study (French, German or Spanish) and a further workshop on one language they have not encountered at school (Spanish, Italian or Russian).
 
The workshops have been devised by PGCE students at the University's Graduate School for Education to make use of the very latest in teaching and learning methods, and will take place in the University's teaching rooms, including the state-of-the-art Multi-Media Centre. Routes into Languages Student Ambassadors will also participate in the workshops in order to support student learning and give the pupils an opportunity to interact with university students / gain insights into university life.
 
This will culminate in a final plenary session led by Dr Debbie Pinfold and the
Language Ambassadors entitled 'What do you do when you've learned all the words?' - a presentation on what it is like to study languages at university, including a discussion about the year abroad and Q&A with the Language Ambassadors.

Year 10-11 French Language Taster Day

Celebrating Success: MFL Pop Video & Speaking Competitions Regional Finals

We are delighted to announce that our big annual Celebrating Success Event will take place on Wednesday 25th June at the University of Bath this year.

 

The event will run in two parts:

 

MFL Speaking Competition Regional Final -

All winners & runners-up from three sub-regional finals in Barnstaple, Swindon and Bath are invited to compete. Students may either improve the presentation that they delivered in March or make an entirely new presentation. Creativity, imagination and an element of drama will be highly commended! The topics are the same as for sub-regional finals and are available in the downloadable competition flyer (see below).

Students will be judged on presentation as well as language skills (spontaneity, fluency, accent, interest, range of language and originality) by a panel of judges.

Cash prizes will be given to winners (£50) & runners-up (£25).

Pop Video Competition Award Ceremony -

Nine nominated videos will compete for the 'Winner 2014' award. The winners in each category, including the 'Online Viewers' Award', will be announced in the Oscar-style ceremony.

All winners & runners-up will receive cash prizes.

And we are hoping to have a live performance by one of the Pop Video winners from previous years again!!

Nominees will be notified by the end of May.

The voting poll for the 'Online Viewers' Award' will open after the closing date for four weeks and nominees will be notified 10 days prior to the event.

 

Programme: 

We are planning to start the event around 12 pm and finish by 4.30 pm.

The programme will be available in early June. 

Year 8 MFL Subject Enrichment Day (French, Spanish & German)

The objectives of this day are to:
- provide a taster of language study in a University environment to develop/raise aspiration to HE and in particular to the study of MFL Post 16 and beyond;
- support the curriculum in areas associated with MFL;
- stimulate and challenge students in the practical application of language skills.

The day, running from 9.30 – 2.30 will focus on three languages, French, Spanish and German, and a lesser taught subject designed to provide the opportunity for participants to “learn a language from scratch”. The visit will include a campus tour and the opportunity to spend time with current UWE students to gain a real insight into life as a student in higher education.

Programme: 

This event is organised jointly with Schools and Colleges Partnership Service at the University of the West of England and is aimed at secondary schools or pupils who meet the WP criteria.

Interactive Workshop 'Teaching French through Drama'

We are delighted to invite teachers of French to attend a one-day training course -- Interactive Workshop for teachers on 'Teaching French through Drama', which will take place on Wednesday 29th January at 11 am - 4 pm at the University of the West of England in Bristol.

Join our interactive workshop to help you use drama techniques to teach French in your classroom or to organise an event. Learn how to revise grammar in context (tenses/ moods/ etc), develop communication, boost your pupils' confidence in French, correct their pronunciation (ever wanted to correct that "u" sound?), discover some vocabulary and have practical examples to take back to your classroom.

Content: Icebreakers, warming up, vocabulary building, pronunciation, grammar and communication...

Cost: £105 per person (including lunch)
