Event Type:
Workshop
Region:
South East
Location:
University of Sussex

This activity, designed for Year 10 students, aims to introduce school students to a campus university environment through the creative use of a modern language.

Students will produce a display of images and short Japanese poems called 'haikus' in many different languages. This year the University of Sussex celebrates its 50th year so the aim is to produce 50 haikus!

After an initial introductory workshop and presentation, in small language groups, students will visit parts of the campus to find out more about it. At specific sites language groups will work on a haiku activity involving words and images.

Following a picnic lunch, outside if the weather permits, students will work on the individual presentation of their morning activity. These will then be displayed digitally in a plenary session in a lecture theatre before departure.

Prizes will be allocated and the finished haikus will be available for display on campus, in schools and on the Routes into Languages website.

Six languages are offered:

  • French - non-beginners
  • German - non-beginners
  • Italian - beginners/non-beginners
  • Spanish - non-beginners
  • Chinese - beginners/non-beginners
  • Japanese - beginners/non-beginners

A limited number of places is available for this event, which will be split across the different language groups. Therefore places will initially be limited to 12 per school.

There will also be a short pre-event activity to complete (details to follow shortly).

If you are interested in taking part in this event, please contact Clare Forder (c.l.forder@brighton.ac.uk) stating the number of places you require and the target language or languages your students will work in. Please ensure you copy Belinda Hackney (b.hackney@sussex.ac.uk) into your email.
