As part of the Oxford Translation Day on 14 June, OGN is hosting its very first translation workshop and slam, to which we invite undergraduates and, especially warmly, Sixth Form students. This should be an excellent opportunity for students to broaden their horizons in all things translation, to chat to undergraduates, and, above all, to have some fun with German!

The workshop will be hosted by OGN and Charlotte Ryland, Editor of New Books in German.

Participants will work together on translating parts of the classic novel Emil und die Detektive (a hilarious, wonderful read for all ages!). Using excerpts from the novel, we will introduce participants to some of the key issues around literary translation (cultural reference, metaphor, idiom, colloquialisms, slang…) before letting them loose on the text, first in pairs and then in larger groups. Participants will experiment with translating into different styles, genres and registers, and there will be book prizes for the most inventive and impressive contributions. The workshop will be challenging, informative and fun!

Because this event is likely to prove very popular, it is advised that you register as soon as possible, but no later than 12 June 2014 by emailing the OGN team.

Dictionaries and texts will be provided - but please bring your own pen and paper!

The event will run from 11.30am-1pm.
