As part of the visiting exhibition to Newcastle City Library Germany’s Confrontation with the Holocaust in a Global Context, Dr Beate Müller (Newcastle University) will guide up to 30 Sixth Form students of German through the exhibition, present a talk about children in the Holocaust and the Third Reich, and deliver an interactive workshop with students using child testimonies from the early post-war period. The event will run for two hours from 14:30-16:30 on Wednesday 18th November at Newcastle City Library and may be of particular interest to students of A Level German also studying A Level History.
As part of the afternoon, students will take part in group work, analysing short texts in German, such as letters or diary excerpts written by children during or shortly after the Hitler regime, which provide insight into a broad spectrum of experiences children had under Hitler. These might range from Gentile German children caught up in Allied bombing campaigns to Jewish children who survived in hiding or in camps.
