This study day examines the themes of the film (representations of young people; racism; cultural background; past and present) and how these important issues shape French society.
Isabelle Vanderschelden will introduce the film in French. Students will be provided with information about the director, the actors, the social and political context of the film. The genre conventions used in the film will also be highlighted. A few short exercises will provide key vocabulary. All students receive a workbook which they can keep.
In the afternoon, there will be a series of language exercises in French, focusing on characters, plot development and themes. The use of language in the dialogue and the role of the visual style will also be discussed.

A group of French young people are brought together for a series of creative writing workshops led by a famous novelist Olivia Dejazet (Marina Foïs). They are tasked with writing a thriller set in their hometown of La Ciotat which has a rich industrial heritage but is now sadly in decline. It soon becomes apparent that one of the group, Antoine (Matthieu Lucci) is very disruptive and antagonistic towards the others. In addition, Antoine’s writing is extremely disturbing and convincing. The leads the group leader to become increasingly fascinated by him and to wonder if he really does have murder fantasies.
