Languages and Law Summer School- Yr 12

The Languages and Law Summer School will take place from Monday 9th July to Friday 13th July 2018

This is an exciting opportunity for budding Year 12 linguists and lawyers to experience university study of these two disciplines at four of Capital L's partners: SOAS, King's College London, the University of Roehampton and the University of Westminster. Students will experience different aspects of law, sample different languages and learn how the two disciplines compliment each other. 

This event is free of charge. Places will allocated on the basis of Widening Participation criteria and teacher recommendation.

Capital L Year 10 Summer School

The flagship Capital L Languages Summer Schools will take place from Monday 18th June to Friday 22nd June 2018

This is a unique opportunity for 30 Year 10 students to experience language study at four different universities: King's College London, the University of Westminster, UCL and SOAS. There will also be a day trip in London. Students will experience a multitude of different languages and cultures and get involved in different interactive activities that will encourage students to be creative.

This summer is free of charge. Places will be allocated on the basis of Widening Participation criteria and teacher recommendation.

World Book Day

Come and explore literature from all across the globe!

World Book Day at SOAS encourages Year 8 and 9 students to explore the pleasures of books and literature from different corners of the world.

The day will focus on literary traditions from Africa, South Asia and the Middle East. Students will have the chance to learn more about books from these different regions and get an introduction to a new language.

The Japanese Day is an opportunity for students to learn more about the language and culture of Japan. The programme includes:

  • A Kamishibai or Japanese storytelling workshop.

Schools are welcome to bring up to 10 students each.

Turkish Immersion Immersion

The Turkish Immersion Academy is a project which is being offered for students who have been entered for GCSE Turkish (Year 9 - 11).

Each session will consist of two language lessons as well as a chance to meet current SOAS students and find out more about higher education.  Students will also receive information about studying languages at university and other language qualifications.

The aims of the project are to help prepare students for their Turkish examinations (particularly by improving their written skills), to give students the opportunity to experience a university environment and to raise the profile of world languages in general.

The students

The students should be heritage Turkish speakers, who have been entered for Turkish GCSE. Priority should be given to those who would be the first generation in their family to attend university and are taking exams this year.  This is a widening participation event forming part of the Capital L-Routes into Languages project.

Die Habenichtse Film Screening @ UCL

Die Habenichtse is the story of a couple who are brought together by a friend who days later dies in the World Trade Centre. The story then focuses on the psychological effects that the death has on the couple.

There will be three workshops around the film: a German language taster, a literature session and film-making session.

Participants will have the opportunity to meet the director, Florian Hoffmeister, the author of the book, Katharina Hacker and current undergraduate students. 

This is aimed at year 12 students who are interested in languages, film, psychology and literature.

The session will take place on Monday 12th February 2018 from 10am till 4pm.

STEP ON- African Studies Twilight Programme

The Step On is a cross-curricular programme, bringing together creativity and all subjects taught at SOAS. Its is aimed at preparing students to make successful transitions to sixth form, further studies and/or life long learning.

Applicants should be interested in the humanities and willing to be challenged.

The programme is very interactive. It will require students to take an active role in individual and group activities. Participants will also be expected to make decisions about and to deliver own tasks on time and to the best of their ability.

Step On Twilight will last 10 weeks and include:

  • Talks and masterclasses on literature, film, politics with a focus on Africa
  • Debates, study skills sessions and a personal research project
  • Tasters in African languages
  • Talks on studying at university, financing your degree and a campus tour

Working with a team of academics, trainers and university students, participants will also be invited to explore a topic of their choice creatively and in-depth. There will be regular follow-up sessions leading to a show-and-tell at the end of the programme.

Sessions will take place on Thursdays from 4 to 6pm. SOAS will reimburse your travel expenses.

Classes are small and priority will be given to students who:

  • 
Are in Year 12*
  • Are currently, or previously, eligible for Free School Meals 
 and/or
  • Are the first generation in their family 
to attend university and/or
  • Have experience of care

Students with disabilities area actively encouraged to apply.

*We will consider applications for Year 11 students if they secure the support of their teachers
