Y12 students studying modern foreign languages are invited to a day of exciting language-based activities. The morning session will consist of language activities at a level appropriate for post-AS students led by PGCE trainees from the Institute of Education, including taster sessions for beginners to encourage students to think about the possibility of studying an additional language as part of a degree. Here at the University of Reading we now offer degree courses for beginners in both German and Italian.
In the afternoon there will be presentations and workshops led by colleagues from the School of Languages and European Studies. Our Careers Advisory Service will also be taking part, looking at careers with languages and also focussing on the transferable skills that studying languages provides.
Over lunch there will be an opportunity for students to see the University campus and to talk to recent graduates about their experiences, and for teachers to meet members of the School of Languages and European Studies.

French and football combine in an exciting inter-school 6-a-side tournament called Score in French! The aim of this event is to reinforce French learnt in the classroom by applying it in a football context. Teachers will be provided with resource packs to use in lessons leading up to the event in order to prepare their players for games conducted in French and French alone! Players will be penalised and could even risk being sent off if they use English on the pitch. Alongside the games, pupils will also engage in quizzes, short plays, a poster competition and other activities - also all in French. Southampton Football Club is supporting this event and will be providing their French-speaking players to assist in the creation of resources, visting schools, and taking part on the day.
The Up for Languages E-mentoring scheme pairs pupils learning languages at school with university language students. Communication between mentors and mentees is conducted via special software so that email exchanges can take place in a secure environment. Pupils are encouraged to practice communicating in a foreign language, ask their mentors for help with specific language problems and mentors are encouraged to provide help and support, as well as other materials and activities if required. The programme will culminate in a celebration event in April at the University.
If you are a Hampshire, IoW or West Sussex school and would like to be part of the scheme for the academic year 09/10 please click on the "Register" link below to arrange a meeting to discuss.
