Routes into Languages NW - European Day of Languages 2024

Join us online to celebrate European Day of Languages on 26 September 2024. This event, aimed at KS3-5, is organised by the Routes into Languages NW network, a collaboration between the Universities of Chester, Lancaster, Liverpool, Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University. 

Register on behalf of your class and beam us into your classroom. Your students will hear from our staff and UG ambassadors about why languages are fun, rewarding and an amazing investment into their future.        

We will be running six identical sessions throughout the day, delivered via Zoom Webinar, and you can join as many as you like. The 35-minute sessions will start at 15 minutes past the hour, finishing at 10 mins to the hour between 9:15am – 14:50pm (session one 9:15 – 9:50, session two 10:15 – 10:15 etc). Each session includes:  

  • Why Study Languages? -  Motivational talk led by university languages staff    

  • Languages can change you! - Panel with MFL student ambassadors 

  • Q&A session (Zoom webinar)

German Poetry Come to Life!

Friday 22 March: 11.00-12.00

This hands-on workshop will examine a range of fun poetry in German, including the visual nature of concrete poetry and the soundscapes of poems that have to be read out loud (including some tongue-twisters!). Come and unleash your inner animal through this fun and exploratory workshop offering various types of poetry and vocabulary activities in Spanish to develop creative ideas which will be the foundation of your own work. The University of Chester will deliver this Chinese session where you will be learning basic information about China and Chinese characters, numbers, and how to greet in Chinese. Join us and explore this amazing language!

Routes NW Online MTOT Workshops

Routes NW is coordinating a series of free online workshops to accompany the Mother Tongue Other Tongue competition. Details of each session, together with registration links, is available in the events section or in the Word document below. 

Each workshop is themed around a specific element relating to poetry and languages, with four workshops involving breakout groups in different languages. This is the ideal opportunity to engage pupils in creative language production, whether they intend to enter MTOT or not. We hope to engage a wide range of teachers and pupils in these live events, but will record the opening plenary session and ensure materials from the breakout sessions are shared with registered teachers after the event. Participants may register individually or in groups, although we anticipate younger age group will join as groups.
