National Year 7 Foreign Language Spelling Bee

Looking for a fun way to get your year 7 students interested in languages and learning lots of new vocabulary? Then look no further! For the second year running, Routes into Languages is hosting a national competition for year 7s in French, German and Spanish. Divided into four rounds (class, school, regional, national) the competition runs throughout the academic year with competitiors learning 50 new words per round. All words relate to the KS3 curriculum and the final 50 words will have a sporting theme in the lead up to the 2012 Olympics.

Hundreds of schools across the country have already signed up, so why not join them and show what your year 7s can do! We have a dedicated website for the competition - www.flspellingbee.co.uk - which is also where you can register.

Day of the Dead - Oxford Brookes

The aim of the day is to help schools encourage students to study Modern Languages at School and then at University. The event will be examining how countries from around the world celebrate the Day of the Dead, before focusing on Mexico. Some of the activities will be in the target language (Spanish) but there will also be hands-on activities such as paper cutting (papel picardo) and the setting up of an altar celebrating the dead. Students will also have the opportunity to ask questions of undergraduate student ambassadors.

Hosted and run by the University of Southampton, Languages E-Mentoring is a scheme designed to challenge and extend your able linguists. It provides an opportunity for students in years 10-11 to have support from a university student studying modern languages. Through e-mentoring students are able to practice their language skills, develop their confidence and understanding and find out more about studying languages at university. Emails between university and school students are exchanged via a secure website which can be accessed at home or school/college.

World of Work (Year 8/9) - Reading

An event for Year 8 and 9 students to emphasise the importance of languages in the global economy. There will be workshops led by employers (including Thames Valley Police) to demonstrate the varied use of languages and the skills that learning a language has given them. Lunch with university student ambassadors, information about work placements abroad and a taster session in a less commonly taught language will also be included.

Routes into Languages National Year 7 Spelling Bee - LAUNCH

For the second year running, Routes into Languages is offering year 7 language learners across the country a chance to take part in a national competition to find England's best foreign language speller! Available in French, German and Spanish, students compete in four rounds to see who can spell the most words correctly in one minute.

The four rounds are:

Class competition - students compete in their language classes to find the top spellers.

School competition - the top spellers from each class compete against in other in a school final. Up to four winners in each language proceed to the regional final.

Regional final - Up to four winners in each language (i.e. up to a total of 12 competitors per school) come together at the University of Brighton to compete for places in the national final.

National final (venue to be confirmed) - those who came in places 1-4 in the regional final (in each language) go on to the national final to compete against pupils from other regions.

Dates for submitting results from the class and school competitions will be announced on September 26th 2011. Dates and times for the regional and national events will be updated in due course.

German Christmas Market

The University of Brighton invites Year 7-13 German students and their teachers to visit a traditional German Christmas market. Students are asked to prepare in advance a short performance in German (a song, short sketch, poem, reading etc). Following the performances students will be free to browse the market stalls, which will include a Lebkuchentisch, a Strohdekorationentisch, a Wunschsterntisch and a Würstchentisch among others. Students will be given "currency" to spend at the stalls but must ask in German! Prizes will be awarded for the best peformance and best use of German.

Up to 20 places per school will be allocated until we have reached the maximum registrations for the event. Please note how many places you would like to book when you register.

Places are free but a cancellation charge of £5 per place booked will be charged if not cancelled within two weeks of the event or if you do not turn up on the day.

 

Day of the Dead (Year 8)

The University of Brighton invites year 8 Spanish students and their teachers to a fun-filled event celebrating the Mexican festival of El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Students will learn about the traditions relating to this event through a target language presentation and video as well as craft activities. They will also taste some of the food and drink usually consumed during the festival.

Up to 20 places per school will be allocated until we have reached the maximum registrations for the event. Please note how many places you would like to book when you register.

Score in German!

Following on from the previous success of the Score in French scheme and tournaments led by the University of Southampton, Royal Holloway, University of London is now launching Score in German! This activity sets German learning in a football context and will culminate in an inter-school tournament in early March. This event is also supported by Chelsea FC, Fulham FC and Queen's Park Rangers FC.
