Following on from the previous success of the Score in French! scheme and tournaments led by the University of Southampton as well as new Score in Spanish! and Score in German! tournaments piloted last year, Royal Holloway, University of London is again running Score in Spanish! This activity sets Spanish learning in a football context and will culminate in an inter-school tournament in early March. This event is also supported by Chelsea FC, Fulham FC and Queen's Park Rangers FC.

An afterschool session (4-6pm) for Year 11/12 to give an insight into the study of a language at University by means of a short lecture. To be followed by a taster language session in a more unusual language (eg Chinese, Japanese) and the opportunity to talk with staff about studying a language at University.

World of Work - Isle of Wight

The event runs from 9am-3pm and involves able linguists from the five Isle of Wight High Schools who are studying in year 11 for their GCSEs in French, Spanish, Italian and German.

The day begins with introductory talks by a range of businesses who will demonstrate to students how useful their languages will be in the world of work and enterprise.

The main focus of the day will be a work related challenge set around a scenario based at a fictitious cruise-line. The students will have to produce posters, radio jingles and a presentation linked to the challenge in the foreign language. They will have access to ‘Tour Operators’ from the country where the language is spoken and will be expected to speak only in the foreign language. The ‘tour Operator’ role will be played by trainee teachers at Portsmouth University who will also have the opportunity to learn how an enterprise day is organised and run. 
 

The Language Experience: from school to starting work

This is an interactive session for Year 12 students based on the experience of learning languages at University from year one right the way through and specifically focusing on the year abroad. The activity will not only look at the broader issues of studying languages at university and taking a year abroad but will test the students' language skills and highlight some of the issues that they may face in a foreign country.

LOVE LANGUAGES? LIVE LANGUAGES!

Do you want to hear about the different types of careers you can get into using your language skills?

Do you want the opportunity to speak directly to university tutors, current languages undergraduate students and business representatives about learning languages?

If so, then come along to the LOVE LANGUAGES? LIVE LANGUAGES! event at the University of Brighton on Friday 11th February 2011. The event will open at 9am (registration) for a 9.30am start. It will finish at 4.15pm.

This free, one-day event is open to all MFL students in years 10-12 and will be an exciting opportunity to find out all you need know about languages-related careers as well as studying languages at university. 

Highlights include:

  • Sessions run by speakers from Government Communication Headquarters, Gloria Vessey Interpreting, British Airways and the Youth Sport Trust
  • Interactive language games
  • Mini taster lectures

World of Work (Year 9)

This is an event for Year 9 students to emphasise the importance of languages in the global economy. There will be workshops led by employers (including Thames Valley Police) to emphasize the varied use of languages and the skills that learning a language has given them, lunch with student ambassadors and information about work placements abroad as part of their courses and a taster session in a less commonly taught language.

The event will run from 10am-2pm

A Level Languages Study Day

If you are studying A Level languages and would like to benefit from a study day, then come along to the University of Southampton on Tuesday 25th January 2011. The day, which will run from 9.30am-3.30pm, will include in-depth study sessions in either French, German or Spanish and taster sessions in new languages. So that you can find out what studying languages at university is like, there will also be a sample lecture and some sessions in the language resource centre.

Languages E-Mentoring

E-mentoring pairs pupils learning languages at school with university language students. Communication between mentors and mentees is conducted via special software so that email exchanges can take place in a secure environment.

Pupils are encouraged to ask their mentors for help with specific language problems and mentors are encouraged to provide help and support, as well as other materials and activities if required. The programme will run from December 2010-February 2011.
