Routes South Great Languages Bake Off!

Date:
Wednesday, 20 May, 2015 - 00:00 to Thursday, 16 July, 2015 - 00:00
Event Type:
Competition
Region:
South East
Location:
Your school + University of Brighton (Falmer campus)

Here at Routes into Languages South we are on the lookout for budding bakers and creative cooks in Year 8 to enter our new Great Languages Bake Off competition!

To enter, pairs of students need to bake some cupcakes following a recipe in either French, German or Spanish. These can be traditional recipes or ones that have been translated. Competitors will then give a (very) short in-class presentation, using as much target language as possible, on how they went about their bake, ready for teachers to judge the best one. Students can bring in samples of their cakes if they think this might help sway the decision!

The winning students as picked by their teacher will then be invited to a Bake Off final at the University of Brighton (Falmer campus) on Thursday 16th July at 1pm. There can be up to two entries per school and those wishing to attend the final will need to complete a registration form and return it by email to Clare Forder no later than Monday 6th July.

On the day, competitors will need to bring in their cupcakes ready for judging! They will also need to submit a poster of their bake (max. A3), including a photo of the finished product and the recipe and ingredients list in the target language. Posters should be submitted by post to arrive at the University of Brighton no later than Monday 13th July so that they can be displayed in advance. Posters will be judged alongside the cakes to find an overall winner per language. Six runner-up prizes will also be awarded.

Please send posters to Clare Forder at:

Oxford Translation Day (Oxford German Network): Poetry Translation Workshop

Date:
Saturday, 13 June, 2015 - 00:00
Event Type:
Workshop
Region:
South East
Location:
TORCH Humanities Centre, Seminar Room

Participants will work together in pairs and in groups on translating a selection of modern German poetry. Using examples from these poems, participants will be introduced to some of the key issues around literary translation and especially translation of poetry. Participants will experiment with translating into different styles, genres and registers, and there will be book prizes for the most inventive and impressive contributions. This challenging, informative and fun workshop will be led by Prof. Karen Leeder, the prize-winning translator of contemporary poets such as Evelyn Schlag, Michael Krüger, Durs Grünbein and Volker Braun! Participants should have at least AS level German and be aged 17 or over. School-age participants are particularly encouraged. Places are limited and so booking is essential.

This event will run from 2pm-4pm.

En route pour les vacances en France

Date:
Thursday, 14 May, 2015 - 00:00
Event Type:
Workshop
Region:
South East
Location:
Dover Christ Church Academy

This exciting event will be held on Thursday 14th May at Dover Christ Church Academy, Kent and will involve pupils from Year 7 & 8. The current cohort of PGCE student teachers from Canterbury Christ Church University will lead a range of activities that will focus around the theme of preparing for a visit to France. The event will start with some tailored input as to why it is important to be able to speak a different language in today’s world which will then lead into the practical language work. This will involve working in small groups, thus enabling pupils to practise their speaking skills in a fun and non-threatening environment. There will be a high level of competition running through the event to see which group of pupils can amass the largest amount of Euros to take them the furthest in France. All these activities will lead to an afternoon “market stall” type event in which the pupils will be required to use the language skills they have learned in the morning to make some transactions that will enable them to depart on a virtual holiday. Some French food will be served at lunchtime to give a further authentic feel to the day.
