The ever popular Language Enrichment Events are back for summer 2012. Aimed at year 8 pupils, the events are designed to motivate language learners and encourage them to carry on with their languages to GCSE level. Our research shows that the events improve uptake at GCSE by 24%.

The events use language tasters and cultural activities in less widely taught languages to encourage the learning of languages generally.

Please note there is a small fee of £4 per pupil to attend.

The events are only open to schools where languages is not compulsory. Priority will be given to schools who have not attended a LEE in previous years.

Essay writing on a film for A-Level (Io non ho paura)

29th February 2012 from 1.30 to 4.30

Location: Manchester Metropolitan University, Mabel Tylecote Building, Room: MT 314.

Fee: £10 (per student (no fee for teachers who are bringing a group)

The workshop will be conducted by Dr. Selena Daly, Lecturer in Italian at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Film and Culture Event for Languages (FACE) GCSE Day

The Film and Culture Event for Languages (FACE) Day is open to language students in Years 10-11 and will be hosted by Manchester Metropolitan University. It is designed to highlight the benefits of learning languages through a Careers and Languages talk, and the fun way in which languages can be taught, with a Languages and Film session. Activities will also include a language taster, to show how languages can be taught at university and highlighting the diverse range of language study options available at a higher level.

The event is hoped to boost students’ enthusiasm for language learning so that they continue with their languages to A Level and beyond. This is an excellent opportunity to show language students the variety of languages on offer; and the variety of fun ways students can learn languages.

This event has a small charge and we are asking for a nominal fee of £4 per pupil to cover some of the costs.

Urdu GCSE Study Session

This full day study session will equip students with a greater understanding of Urdu language and cultural aspects of learning Urdu. In this interactive session, students will demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the different characters of Hirani’s Three Idiots and will study the film’s key themes in a series of exercises tailored to meet GCSE listening, reading, writing and speaking targets.

Spanish AS/A2 Study Session: El laberinto del fauno

This session is open only to young people between 14 – 19 years old accompanied by their teacher.

Recommended for: AS / A2 and equivalent level Spanish.

Led by Carmen Herrero, Head of Spanish at Manchester Metropolitan University.

In this study session, Carmen Herrero will introduce the themes and historical background to El Laberinto del fauno.The session will introduce students to aspects of contemporary Spanish and Mexican cinemas and will focus on the work of director Guillermo del Toro. Students will be able to discuss the events depicted in the film in Spanish, and to complete AS and A2 level language exercises based on the film.
