Throughout the year we have a variety of MFL study sessions specially programmed to support GCSE, AS and A2 students of French, German, Spanish and Urdu, all led by native language speakers.

Each of our study sessions use film as an exciting and accessible way to encourage students to use their language skills. Students will enjoy a specially selected film, screened in the target language with English subtitles. Sessions are supported by contextualising introductions, which provide information about the themes and characters of the film along with information about the film's director and place within film history and culture. Following the film, students complete language exercises based on the film using their new vocabulary.

Films are selected to complement GCSE, AS and A2 specifications and provide excellent material for topic-based work and oral exam preparation.

All French sessions are led by Isabelle Vanderschelden, Senior Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University.

This study session will use the Provence-set La fille du puisatier to address the theme of regional difference and identity in France.  Isabelle Vanderschelden will give a contextualizing introduction in French to highlight elements of regional identity.  The film will be introduced in French and a range of language exercises designed to assist students with their reading, writing, speaking and listening, will follow the screening.    The post-screening activities will address the main themes in the film which include: families, traditions, class differences and relationships between adults and children. The session will also include a short awareness raising exercise on regional accents.

There won’t be a third meeting: Jacques is sent to the Front. When Patricia ends up pregnant, the Mazels, the boy’s rich parents, refuse to recognise the child and talk about blackmail. Patricia and her father, the well-digger, are left alone to welcome her child to the world. But when Jacques goes missing in action, the Mazels quickly search out the child, desperate to be part of that remnant of their son’s life
